Chapter 15

“Well, as I said, my mother was one of my father’s Derbyshire neighbors. They grew up together, and fell in love at a young age. Father went to University at Cambridge just like my grandfather did, but he was not the heir to the estate. His older brother, Bennet was. Father did not wish to join the army, nor did he want to be a lawyer or a preacher. Those were the only three options open to someone of his social standing. As I told you before, he was a wild one and wanted adventure. So, he decided to move to the United States. He didn’t want to leave his love behind, so he convinced her to marry him and move with him. Mother said she agreed in an instant and never looked back.

“From what I understand, my grandparents were devastated by the news. They begged him to reconsider. He was determined, though. He described the arguments he had, especially with my grandfather. In the end, they had no choice but to let him go. He did his best to keep in touch, but letters took a long time to go back and forth. I remember when both sets of my grandparents died; my parents were devastated. They locked themselves in their room for hours; I could hear them crying. The Burns and Darcy families had been close for many years, like an extended family, and when one member passed away, it was a difficult thing for the rest.”

“That’s amazing. My family was not close like that, even when Father was alive. Were your parents close to you, as well?”

“They were. It was a severe blow when they died, both for me, and for my sister.”

“I’m sorry; I know what that feels like.”

“What about you? Do you know how your parents met?” Lizzy rarely spoke about her family, and Will was curious to learn more about them.

“My parents met at a ball in Boston. Mama’s father was a lawyer, and my father had just inherited a financial empire from his own. They never spoke much about it, but it seemed as though either Mama compromised him, or he was so infatuated that he couldn’t see her flaws.”

“Her flaws?”

“My mother is not the most intelligent creature in the world. Papa called her silly with good reason. He, on the other hand, was opposite. He had attended Harvard University, graduating with honors. Even before my grandfather died, Papa had been in charge of the finances of the family business and fortune.

“He always wanted sons. I suspect he blamed Mama for having five daughters. According to my aunt and uncle, Papa withdrew further from my mother with the birth of each girl. At the time he died, he had little to do with us. He left Mama in charge of everything related to his home and his daughters, and he immersed himself in work and books.

“I was his favorite daughter, and my older sister was Mama’s favorite. I was allowed to spend the most time with Papa, where the rest were rarely allowed into his study.
